Do you feel like you are
missing out on conversations? Are you mistaking or mixing up words, such as hat
and sat or time and dime? Do you think people are mumbling? If you are
mishearing, getting lost in group conversations due to missing what was said,
then you likely have a hearing loss. In
general, hearing loss is more noticeable than wearing hearing aids. A person
with hearing loss misses or misinterprets parts of conversations, often has to
ask others to repeat what was said, and plays the television louder than normal
hearing people find comfortable.
Hearing loss tends to be a gradual
process, but putting on hearing aids is instantaneous. It takes time for our
brains to adapt to having the sounds from the hearing aids that it was previously
missing due to hearing loss. Our brains need time to adjust and the best way to
do that is to wear the hearing aids for at least four hours a day to get used
to them. You can also lower the volume by two steps to gradually get used to
the sound. It may take a few months. 1. Give it time. 2. Give your brain
exposure (by wearing the hearing aids.) 3. Allow yourself a grace period to get
used to the sound. Your brain will thank you.
Over the counter hearing
aids, also known as OTC hearing aids, are designed for people with mild to
moderate hearing aids. These hearing devices can be purchased without seeing an
audiologist or hearing care professional. OTC hearing aids usually come with preset
sound options on the hearing aids that you can use based off of your current listening
environment. Hearingaidsandmore.com is a convenient online retailer of OTC hearing
aids.
Prescription hearing aids are programmed by a hearing care provider based
off of your specific hearing loss. They can be fit for people with moderate,
severe or profound hearing loss, in addition to those with mild or moderate
hearing losses. If you have found that OTC hearing aids are not loud enough,
then you likely have a more significant hearing loss and need prescription
hearing aids.
If you have hearing loss in
both ears, then wearing two hearing aids has been shown to provide greater
benefit. When wearing two hearing aids, a person can localize to where sound is
coming from in the environment better, can hearing better in noisy
environments, and experience a binaural advantage, which allows a person using
two ears to hear better without overamplifying.
Hearing aids shouldn’t get
wet, so don’t wear them in the shower. To clean your hearing aids, wipe them
with a dry tissue every night after you take them out. This prevents earwax
from caking onto the domes. The domes and waxguards on the earpiece that goes
into your ear should get changed once a month.
It is recommended that people
with hearing loss should have their hearing tested once a year to monitor for
changes in their hearing levels.
In addition to wearing
hearing aids, other techniques that can be used to enhance your hearing fall
under the broader category of aural rehabilitation. Here are some examples of
things you can do to help you hear better in challenging listening environments.
